It’s probably not very hard to try and talk you into getting more sleep. You most likely would, if you could. Wouldn’t it be nice to sleep like this, for a full 8-10 hours?

However, as your healthcare partners at Brigham City Community Hospital, we really like explaining things about your health. So we would like to inform you as to why, exactly, you should be sleeping more.

Sleep is beneficial to your health in many ways, but to keep this short, let’s look at just three real pluses of sleep:

  1. Good sleep protects your heart - Long-term sleep deprivation has been linked to inflammation of your cardiovascular system. Plainly said: lack of sleep affects your blood vessels and arteries. Sleep deprivation can be a factor in heart disease, heart attacks and stroke. Your heart loves sleep.
  2. Sleep can help prevent diabetes - Here’s how this works: sleep deprivation causes your body to develop conditions that are very much like insulin resistance seen with diabetes. One study found that people in their late 20s and early 30s who slept less than 6.5 hours per night had the insulin sensitivity of someone more than 60 years old!
  3. Sleep helps you lose weight - The value of maintaining a healthy weight for your wellbeing cannot be overstated. Researchers at the University of Chicago found that dieters who rested more lost more weight than those who missed sleep – 56% more weight!

Here are 11 other surprising benefits of having a good snooze.

Of course many of us have trouble sleeping, and that can often be caused by syndromes or disease that need medical attention.

Can’t sleep? See your family physician to learn more about why you’re not sleeping and what sort of resources are there to help you.
